‘Kamal thinking not rooted to reality’

Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) on Monday suffered a setback with the resignation of its executive committee member CK Kumaravel, a well-known entrepreneur, who claims to have taken the decision due to internal politics.

Addressing newspersons here, Kumaravel said, “Kamal is a good person who wants to bring a change in Tamil Nadu and the country. However, his thinking was not rooted to reality. I thought it can be changed over time, but it became worse over time.”

Alluding to the surprise appointment of R Mahendran as the party’s Vice-President, he said that Kamal had informed the decision to the executive committee members just half an hour before making the announcement.

Kumaravel said that his decision to resign was taken after the party’s reaction to his Facebook post declaring his candidature from Cuddalore LS seat, which also sought the support of volunteers to take upelection work.

“I was told that it was wrong on my part to reveal my candidature even before the party released the list of candidates. I met Kamal and apologised,” he said, pointing out that actress Kovai Sarala, who joined the party only recently, was in the panel which interviewed him.

“Even after being in the party for the last one year, I did not have Kamal’s mobile number. Only a few top-level office bearers have his number. This is the state of affairs in other parties as well. Then how can we call the MNM, a party for alternative politics,” he wondered.

However, in a statement, the MNM announced that it has accepted Kumaravel’s resignation because he violated the party rules. “The MNM has a strict zero-tolerance policy on applicants violating party principles for which it gives utmost importance.”

Meanwhile, Republican Party of India president Se Ku Tamilarasan called on Kamal to discuss an alliance for the April 18 LS polls in TN. The party is planning to release the candidate list on Wednesday.
