Over 100 residents of Agrapalayam, located on the outskirts of Arni town, detained a lorry ferrying domestic LPG cylinders on Friday protesting excess charges by a private gas distribution agency.

Delivery boys of the private agency affiliated to BPCL, which supplies LPG cylinders in Arni and its neighbouring villages, charge from Rs 730 to Rs 750 per as against the government-fixed price of Rs 718 per cylinder.

According to the protesters, those who objected to the excess charges were delivered cylinder late. Angered over this and since no action was taken against the delivery boys by the distributor, residents detained a lorry carrying a load of LPG cylinders.

On information, the distributor sought the help of local bigwigs and tried to settle the issue by promising to collect only the government fixed price in future. Following this assurance, villagers relented and released the lorry before dispersing from the spot.
