HC stalls raising of temple on poromboke land

The Madras High Court has restrained the construction of a temple in 3.42 hectares of poromboke land within the Tiruvannamalai Municipal Limits.

A division bench comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad before whom a plea seeking to stall the construction of a temple and recover the land from the three persons who had encroached the land in question, said, “From the submissions of counsels on either side, it can be seen that the said land is a government poromboke, in which construction of a temple is in progress.” “Government property cannot be permitted to be encroached upon and illegal construction cannot be permitted to continue. 

Having found such construction, we hereby restrain the three persons from proceeding further with the construction. Tiruvannamalai District Collector and Commissioner of Tiruvannamalai Municipality, to take appropriate action, if construction is continued.” The plea has been posted for further hearing to March 25.
