Gang snatches student’s phone at knifepoint

A gang of four allegedly attacked a student and relieved him of his mobile phone at Washermenpet on Thursday.

The police identified the victim as Yugendran of Sathuma Nagar in Tiruvottiyur, who is pursuing his B Com at a college in Korrukkupet. He was returning home on his bike after visiting his sister when the incident happened.


As he was riding on Surya Narayana Street in New Washermenpet, he was intercepted by the four-member gang. The gang members threatened Yugendran at knifepoint and took away his mobile phone. The victim later lodged a complaint with New Washermenpet police.


In another incident, a 24-year old youth was nabbed by members of the public when he tried to snatch a mobile phone and escape at Guindy on Thursday. According to the police, Dinesh (21) a third year student of a private college in Avadi, was waiting at the bus stop in Guindy when a man on a bike snatched his mobile phone and tried to escape from the scene.


The victim’s cries for help attracted the attention of the public, who immediately intercepted the bike. They overpowered the biker and handed him over to the police. He was later identified as Manikandan (24) of Washermenpet.
