Government sources said that Kamaraj recently attended the Pongal gift hampers distribution function in Tiruvarur. Doctors suspected that the minister might have contacted the virus from the function.

After testing positive, officials in Tiruvarur were directed to test all those who were in close proximity to him in the function. Sources also said that a detailed medical bulletin will be released by the hospital in the evening. However, Kamaraj is not the first minister to test positive for COVID-19 as already Higher Education Minister KP Anbalagan, Labour Minister Nilofer Kafeel and former Agri Minister R Doraikkannu had already contracted the pandemic.

Except Doraikkannu, who succumbed to the infection, other ministers have successfully recovered. Sources added that Kamaraj is doing fine in the hospital and is out of danger.
