First Ilango Adigal fest today

Starting this year, state government would observe April 24 as Ilango Adigal festival to commemorate the poet’s contributions to Tamil literature and way of life.

The state has announced that it would take up the celebration of Kambar and Ilango Adigal festivals when the demand for Tamil Development Department was moved in the Assembly during the last fiscal 2017 – 2018. In continuation, the state has already issued government orders to this effect. 

A portrait of the poet will be installed near his statue in Anna Square and floral tributes will be offered to the poet. The event will be attended by the ministers, literary enthusiasts and officials from the Tamil Development Department. 

The state during Jayalalithaa’s regime had instituted awards in the name of the poet. As per the announcement, the Ilango Adigal award will be conferred on those who create  epics in the lines of  the poet or propagates Silapathikaram.
