Recently, a section of media carried news that wastes are dumped at Anupanadi and Panaiyur channels and because of it, the water had stagnated and had been polluted resulting in diseases. Based on the media report High Court took suo moto petition. In the earlier hearing the court had directed the Madurai Corporation to submit the photos of cleaning works carried out in the two channels.

On Tuesday, public prosecutor argued that cleaning works are undertaken on a war footing in the two channels, but however due to encroachments machines could not be deployed in the water channels. Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Nisha Banu directed the government to remove all the encroachments in the channels. The justices also directed the Madurai Corporation to submit the reports of cleaning works undertaken every month.

Indira Banerjee also noted that Madurai is a traditional city and considering its beauty officials should take efforts to maintain the city clean. The Judge also observed that when foreigners visit Madurai to witness the beauty, traditional nature and the architecture of the buildings, officials must maintain cleanliness.
