Farmers, activists on hunger strike opposing Salem-Chennai expressway

With process of pulling out the 8 lane expressway project from legal constraints, the farmers, environmental and political activists have reinvigorated their protests that was in truce.

Farmers and activists started protests afresh after the Central government challenged the Madras High Court's decision to stall Salem-Chennai 8 lane expressway project worth 10,000 crores.

Last Saturday, farmers of Ayodhiyapattinam and Nazhikkalpatti protested with black flags. As a continuation, farmers from 16 villages are taking part in the hunger strike on Monday. 

The farmers symbolically were embracing the soil expressing their fealty to agriculture. Protest leaders questioned the haste, Government is showing in destroying farmlands, livelihood  of farmers, habitat and paving way to diseases in the garb of development.
