Early birds BJP, AMMK start preparing for local body polls

As the Dravidian majors - AIADMK and DMK are yet to get into the poll mode for the upcoming local body elections, the BJP and the AMMK have emerged as the early birds setting the agenda for their party workers.

The AMMK which is disappointed with the State Election Commission for delaying the allocation of a common symbol is also now planning to approach the Madras High Court.

“The AMMK has begun the process of fighting the polls alone and has reached out to the State Election Commission seeking a common symbol for its party candidates. Our party leader P Vettrivel is on the job and we are confident of getting a common symbol. AMMK is now a registered party with the Election Commission and the authorities cannot deny a common symbol,” said an AMMK district secretary.

Meanwhile, the BJP on Tuesday conducted a high-level meeting in the presence of its national general secretary Muralidhar Rao and former union minister Pon Radhakrishnan to discuss the strategies for civic polls. “We are evaluating the strengths of our party and party workers are geared up for the polls. In case, if there are conflict of interests in getting the seats, the same will be discussed with AIADMK and other alliance partners,” Pon Radhakrishnan told reporters.

The DMK which has moved a petition in Supreme Court challenging the State Election Commission is working on the litigation and is yet to commence the seat sharing talks with its allies the Congress, Left and VCK.

As per the revised latest announcement, nominations for the local body polls in 27 districts will begin on December 9. Scrutiny of nominations will be held on December 17. The last date for withdrawing the nominations is December 19 and the counting of votes is scheduled on January 2, 2020.

As per the poll schedule of SEC the direct election to fill up the total of 1,18,974 posts in rural local bodies is to be held on December 27 and 30. The nominations for the posts were to commence on Friday. This includes 12,524 posts of village panchayat presidents and 99,324 posts of village panchayat ward members.

Following the recent changes, the number of mayors in state will move to 16, an all-time high in the history of state politics. The state now has 102 municipal chairman posts and 12,524 panchayat posts lying vacant.
