DMK fields MM Abdullah for Rajya Sabha poll

The ruling DMK announced its NRI wing joint secretary MM Abdullah as the candidate for the September 13 Rajya Sabha by-election. Chief Minister MK Stalin made the announcement. A native of Pudukkottai, Abdullah is also a member of the DMK general council.

Given the DMK’s strength in the House, Abdullah’s nomination to the Upper House would be a mere formality. Vacancy arose for a seat following the demise of AIADMK’s Muhammedjan early this year. The DMK’s choice of candidate has already won the appreciation of a few of its allies. Congress MP from Sivaganga Karti P Chidambaram welcomed the decision of “giving representation to a person from the minority faiths” and tweeted, “We need diversity of representation. TN needs more women MPs too.”

The strength of DMK could go up to eight members in the event of Abdullah’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha. Should the ECI choose to fill two other RS vacancies separately, like it would do next month, the DMK could become the fourth largest party in the Rajya Sabha with 10 members.
