According to the statistics given by Minister for Industries MC Sampath in the Assembly, the employment generation through SMEs in 2016-17, was 18.79 lakh as against only 13.78 in 2017-18, thus five lakh jobs could not materialise.
However, showing small recovery, in 2018-19, over 15.33 lakh persons got employment through SMEs as against 13.78 lakh in 2017-18.
Similarly, on the registration part, the data further said that in 2017-18 a total of 2,17,981 MSMEs in the state have registered as against the 2016-17 figure of 2,67,310, a reduction of over 49,000 units.
Trend in the registration of MSMEs in Tamil Nadu further showed that in 2018-19, the number of registered MSMEs have slightly increased by 2,33,954 compared to 2017-18 figure of 2,17,981, however a decline of over 33,000 small organisations in comparisonto 2016-17 figures.
Likewise, in investment portion, in 2016-17, the MSMEs brought in money to the tune of Rs 36,221 crore. However, the figure reduced to Rs 25,373 crore in 2017-18. Making a small comeback in 2018-19, the MSMEs in the state stretched its investment to Rs 30,078 crore.
A senior official from the MSMEs Department told DT Next that in 2018 only the state government has brought Business Facilitation Act to ensure single point receipt of applications for securing clearances that are required to establish an enterprise. “Accordingly, the number of MSMEs registrations in 2018-19 has increased,” he added.
In addition, the government also introduced a single window committee in 2018 for MSMEs where entrepreneurs could get various licenses and approvals from various departments under the new system.
“This year the government expects an increase of about 10 per cent in MSMEs registration and also in employment generation through the small industries,” he added.
