Dalit students hit by tractor, says CM

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami informed the House that the death of two Dalit youths, who were found with grievous injuries at Thirukovilur, was due to a mishap involving a tractor.

The CM’s announcement came in reply to a special call attention motion moved by the DMK legislator K Ponmudi in this regard. Kirubanidhi, (a BE student), his friend Gopinath, a plus-two student and Veeramani, a school dropout, were found injured on New Year.  

The trio were admitted to Thirukovilur GH and then referred to Mundiyambakkam GH where Kirubanidhi succumbed. The survivors were then moved to JIPMER where Veeramani died. Gopinath is battling for his life. Kirubanidhi’s father had lodged a complaint. 

EPS said that Manikandan was held for driving a tractor recklessly. He announced a solatium of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
