Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said that thanks to rainwater harvesting, groundwater level in the city has increased. "The awards will be distributed on Republic Day," he added. Meanwhile, Chennai Corporation and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) had already identified 330 unused community wells and renovated them for recharging ground water. These wells were converted into ornamental wells, thus providing an aesthetic appeal as well.

"Pipe connections have been attached to the restored wells and nearby buildings to let runoff rainwater into the wells. Similarly, rainwater harvesting structures have been created in all the buildings of Chennai Corporation and Metro Water," a press release said.

The civic body had constituted ward-level teams to identify buildings without rainwater harvesting structures in their allocated division and implore the owners to construct one such structure in their premises. From the date of formation of the ward-level teams, the teams had inspected more than 3.15 lakh buildings in the city. The teams had identified more than 2.47 lakh buildings in which rainwater harvesting structures already exist. Of the total inspected buildings, rainwater harvesting structures in 21,582 buildings required improvements and works have already begun to improve them. "Apart from this, 41,694 new rainwater harvesting structures have been created," the release added.
