CMRL officials said the special purpose mobile gantry crane was mainly used for bridge construction. “We decided to use the technology given the stretches in this part of corridor were comparatively narrow,” an official said.

A seven km stretch between Tiruvottiyur and Wimco Nagar is narrow when compared with Phase-I construction. “In Phase-I, a whopping amount was spent on land acquisition. But this was brought down while building the extension. The main problem during construction was the narrow stretches. It was difficult to deploy heavy machines and workers,” he said.

The nine km stretch between Korukkupet and Thiruvottiyur elevated corridor will comprise of both elevated and underground stations. It is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 3,770 crore. The deadline for the project is 2022 but officials are planning to open it for public use by 2020.

“Around 50 per cent work has been completed in this corridor. Two km works for the construction of subway has been completed,” he said.

After Korukkupet station, works related to Toll Gate will be taken up immediately.
