The team members would visit farmlands on Tuesday, said sources in Thanjavur Collectorate.

Collector A Annadurai, during the farmers’ grievances redressal meeting held on Friday, had announced that a Central Government team would tour Tamil Nadu on January 22, 23 and 24 to assess the drought situation.

However, the tour schedule has been postponed. “We received the information about change in the team’s schedule on Saturday. As per the revised schedule, the team will reach Thanjavur on Monday night and start the assessment process from Tuesday. No specific reason has been given for the rescheduling of the Central team’s programme”, said official sources.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed sources said that the team’s visit was postponed as jallikattu had been planned on Sunday across the state after the ordinance.

However, the farmers claimed that the team’s visit could have been postponed due to rain in the region. It would be difficult for the team to gauge the real level of drought during rains, they added.
