Cautionary signal hoisted at VOC Port

A distant cautionary signal has been hoisted at VO Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi on Saturday following depression forecast from the Indian Meteorological Department.

According to sources, a depression has formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and it lays centred on Saturday near latitude 10.4°N and longitude 87.0°E, about 1,100 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 1,250 km south of Digha (West Bengal) and 1,330 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).

It is predicted to intensify rapidly into a cyclonic storm on Saturday evening and further into a severe cyclonic storm during subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards initially till May 17 and then re-curve north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal towards West Bengal coast during 18-20 May 2020, sources said.

Similar trend also prevailed in Pamban, Ramanathapuram district, where also distant cautionary signal was hoisted. Hence, fishermen were advised to be cautious, sources said.
