Sources said that Palaniappan (61), a small-time merchant from Orathanadu, along with his wife Indira (50) and son Kumaresan (30) went to attend a family function in Pudukkottai district on Monday and returned to his house in Orathanadu in the early hours on Tuesday. When they tried to open the gate, they were shocked to find it damaged.
When Palaniappan went inside the house and checked, he spotted an unidentified person moving around. The intruder, shocked by the entry of Palaniappan, attempted to push him and escape from the spot.
Indira, who was standing near her husband, landed an ‘unexpected’ punch, which threw the burglar on to the floor.
Palaniappan and Kumaresan then acted swiftly and caught the intruder, preventing his escape from the house.
All the three then raised an alarm, and on hearing their screams, neighbours rushed to the spot, caught the burglar and recovered some weapons from him. Later, the intruder was handed over to the police.
During inquiry by the Orathanadu Sub Inspector of Police Vijay Krishna, the suspect identified himself as Rajendran (57) and said that he was part of a four-member gang. While he was caught, his associates managed to escape from the locality. Meanwhile, the police appreciated the brave act of the elderly couple.
