According to sources, Purushothaman (29) of Kuthalam in Nagapattinam district, was married to Abirami (25) and the couple had an 18-month-old baby girl, Dhanasri. Purushothaman, who works abroad, came to his native and returned only last month, while Abirami resided with her parents-in-law.

Against this backdrop, there was a dispute in the family and the in-laws and the neighbours over this reportedly stopped talking with Abirami. This had worried Abirami and she hence decided to take the extreme step, sources said.

In the late hours on Tuesday, Abirami reportedly mixed pesticide in milk and offered it to the baby, which consumed it and vomited. On seeing the baby’s strange behaviour, neighbours inquired with Abirami who then revealed the act. The neighbours then rushed the baby to Mayiladuthurai GH where she is undergoing treatment. Abirami, however, did not go to attend to the baby in the hospital.

On suspicion, the neighbours went in search of Abirami, but were shocked to see her hanging.

Upon information, the Kuthalam police rushed to the spot and retrieved the body and sent it to the Mayiladuthurai GH. Based on a complaint by Abirami’s mother Nirmala, the Kuthalam police have registered a case. As Abirami died within three years of her marriage, the Assistant Collector (Mayiladuthurai), Kanmani, also held an inquiry.
