5 held for illegal sand mining near Cheyyar

Five persons, including two women, were arrested for illegally mining and transporting sand to other places in a mini lorry near Cheyyar on Friday.

During a routine check in Cheyyar town, police identified a mini lorry speeding away from them after seeing them check all the vehicles.

Immediately police chased the mini lorry and on seeing this, the driver jumped out of the lorry. However, the moving vehicle came to a halt only after ramming into two parked cars. On investigation with the remaining five people in the lorry, police found that the mini lorry was carrying illegally mined sand and they confessed that they were hired for mining sand. Five persons identified as Sakthivel, his wife Sathya, Perumal, his wife Radha and Balaji, all from various localities in the town were arrested. Police registered a case for illegal mining and also based on the complaint from the damaged cars owners. Police then seized the mini lorry and are on a hunt for driver Ilanchezhian who is still at absconding.
