3.5 tonnes of tobacco products seized from godown in Tirupur, 4 held

In a major haul, Tirupur police seized 3.5 tonnes of banned tobacco products from a godown near Palladam and arrested four persons on Thursday. Acting on a tip off, a police team led by Mangalam Station Inspector K Neeladevi made a surprise check at the godown.

“The check was done following specific information that huge loads of banned tobacco products had arrived at the godown on Wednesday night. There were seven different brands of banned tobacco products weighing around 3,456.35 kg and worth about Rs 22 lakh,” said a police officer. Police said that the culprits S Aravind Raj (24), J Vaigundaraman (38) and P Muthukrishnan (35), all hailing from different areas in Tirupur and C Saji Prasath (43) from Coimbatore sped away in vehicles on seeing the cops. However, they were nabbed after a short chase by police and two mini trucks and a car were seized from them. Inquiries revealed that the banned tobacco products were smuggled from Karnataka for supply in Tirupur, Coimbatore and other areas. The accused were booked under IPC section 273 and were remanded in judicial custody. Further inquiries are on.
