Indians played for themselves, claims Inzamam

Former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq felt the difference between India and Pakistan during his cricket days was that Indians played for themselves while Pakistan players played for the team.

“When we were up against India, its batting was more powerful than ours on paper. If you look at our batters [at that time], they made 30 to 40 runs, which was for the team. But that wasn’t the case with Indian players. Even if they scored 100, they played for themselves,” Inzamam said during a chat show with Ramiz Raja on YouTube.

“So, that was the difference between the two teams,” he added. Inzamam, who represented the national team in 120 Tests, 378 ODIs and a sole T20I between 1991 and 2007, played at a time when Pakistan dominated India.

However, in recent times, the tables have turned with India having an upper hand over its Asian neighbour.

Overall, India and Pakistan have played 59 Tests, 132 ODIs and 8 T20Is against each other in which the former has won 9, 55 and 6 matches respectively. Pakistan has emerged victorious in 12, 73 and 1 games respectively.

When it comes to the 50-over World Cup, India has won all the seven matches it has played against Pakistan. In the T20 World Cups, India has come out on top in four out of five matches against Pakistan while the remaining one yielded no result.
