India starts 3rd phase of restoration of Ta Prohm temple in Cambodia

Indian archaeologists have commenced the third and the most challenging mega phase of restoration project at Ta Prohm temple near Angkor Wat heritage complex.

The 12 the century temple is the latest discovery in Angkor Wat and the new complex is said to be a temple dedicated to Brahma. 

A team of experts from Archaeological Survey of India launched the project this month, which is third in series of restoration work being carried out under the overall guidance of a multinational committee, comprising 20 nations, including India. 

The Rs 27 Cr project is likely to go on for next ten years before the temple comes fully alive from the complete ruins, the team leader DK Sood told. The ASI, which earlier carried out restoration work at main Angkor wat temple complex from 1986 to 1993, was again tasked to make alive Ta Prohm, which came  to international limelight after film, starred Angela Jolly, ‘Tomb raider’ was shot here. 

The first phase started at Ta Prohm in 2004, after then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Cambodia.
