India condoles demise of Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi

India on Friday condoled the demise of Tunisian President Mohamed Beji Caid Essebsi and described him as a great leader who was instrumental in the peaceful democratic transition of the north African country.

Essebsi died on Thursday at the age of 92. He was the oldest sitting president in the world.

"We are deeply saddened by the demise of Mohamed Beji Caid Essebsi, President of the Republic of Tunisia," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

It said Essebsi was a great leader and patriot who was instrumental in the peaceful democratic transition of Tunisia.

"He was a staunch defender of democratic values and worked tirelessly for the well-being of his people," it said, adding, "President Essebsi will be remembered for his significant contribution to strengthening of bilateral ties between India and Tunisia."

The MEA said the government and people of India conveyed their deepest condolences to the government and people of Tunisia.
