To begin with, the access control system, already operational in Kolkata and Delhi Metro services, will be implemented at non-metropolitan stations where traffic rush is very less. 

CRIS, the software arm of the Railways, is on the job to make the new flap gate system operational at Brar Square station in Delhi Division as a pilot project. The access control system at Brar Square will be functional in the next three months, said a senior Railway Ministry official. If successful, the system will enable the Railways to deal with the shortage of train ticket examiners and ticket collectors. 

According to the system design, an encrypted QR code will be printed on unreserved tickets for the designated station where passengers need to enter or exit through these gates after validating their tickets. 

The automatic flap gate system can handle faster entry or exit of passengers during the rush hour. Besides installing automatic gates, there will be counters at the Brar Square station to provide QR-coded tickets to passengers for entry or exit. It costs about Rs 4 lakh to install the automatic gate with barcode facility. Besides, there will be thermal printers at ticket counters for barcoded tickets. The system is already in use in the metro networks in the country.

3AC lower berth for disabled 

Indian Railways has decided to fix a quota for disabled in the 3AC coach of mail and express trains to make the journey hassle-free. The necessary software is being readied for this, said a senior Railway Ministry official here.

FLAP BARRIERS AT WORK:

• Widely used in malls, parking lots, entry or exit points to parks, metro stations, etc
• A reader placed in the flap barriers reads/writes data
• It works on Near Field Communication Technology that allows two devices to communicate with each other when brought in proximity or touched
• NFC tag is embedded within a token or card
• The reader installed on the flap gate communicates with the token when it is placed or brought near it
• The sensor on the flap gate works on Electromagnetic Induction to transmit data. Radio Frequency Identification also comes into play
• Railways plans tickets with unique barcodes to be used at flap barriers 
• Flap barriers can be remote controlled or used with biometric identity system or push button
• It costs Rs 4 lakh to install an automatic gate with barcode facility 
• Flap barriers are used for access control
• Often used at indoor and outdoor facilities where personal surveillance is available as flap barriers can be easily surmounted
• The flaps open automatically as soon as a person swipes his pass, ticket, token or identity card that has payment or identity data stored in it digitally
