A ‘Know Your Rights’ session was conducted to acquaint civil society members on their rights and inform them on various redressal processes to register their grievances about civic problems in their localities.

Around 300 people participated in the session, said Subathra Devi, coordinator for the event organised by Arappor Iyakkam. “The session taught the participants the RTI Act and what their rights are when dealing with the police department and details on how to complain against bribes or other civic problems and how to escalate the complaint due to non-action by authorities,” said the volunteer. Around 90 per cent of the crowd was less than 40 years of age, she said. “We also gave examples of how RTI applications have changed lives. Many people are enthusiastic but don’t know how to complain about a civic problem – like garbage pile-up or clogged drains – in their localities. We also empowered them with details on whom they can complain to, if they are harassed by the Police or other bodies for a bribe,” she added.

Vimal Kumar, a 22-year-old who has been volunteering with various organisations, said the session inspired him to file his first RTI. “I wanted to find ways whereby I can change the society and this session was very useful in helping me know what I can do in various situations. I am now filing my first RTI to tackle the problem of garbage in my village, which is in Villupuram district,” added the youngster.

Sachin B Shah, another participant and employee of a private firm, said that the session taught them how to file complaints. “I learnt that one needn’t necessarily go to the Councillor or Corporation office to file a complaint. It can be done online easily and escalated too, if action has not been taken,” he said.
