Robotics, a rage among summer camps

Robotics is touted to be one of the most sought-after subjects among youngsters these days, with many institutions offering courses for students in the age group of eight to seventeen.

The popularity of the robots and Robotics can be measured from the fact that Express Avenue recently acquired a five-foot tall robot with the aim of helping shoppers visiting the mall get access to details of stores, directions to specific outlets, etc,. Students say that it helps them use logic and create machines that could be used in day-to-day life.

“As part of my school project, I created a car model, where the lights switch on automatically when it is dark. It has sensors capable of detecting the brightness or lack of it in the outside atmosphere and switches on when it is pitch dark. It does so without any human interference. This is helpful while driving on a highway and when the vehicle enters a tunnel,” explains Class 11 student Vijay Kumar, who has been attending robotics classes for two years now.

Lema Labs, incubated in IIT Madras, is organising a summer crash course on the fundamentals of Robotics at IIT Madras Research Park, Tharamani. Called the Kaizen Robotics Programme, it provides a seven-day training on usage of basic electronic components and their application.

“There are two programmes: One is for students between Class 8 and 12, where they will be taught the basics. No programming is involved here, but the students will use logic to work on a machine. The second one is for students who have finished Class 12. They are taught programming, using which they will learn to make the robot function,” says Yashas BD, Robotics engineer.

The students will further get a chance to participate in competitions and hone their skills Kidobotikz, which has, in the past trained students build robots to clean beaches and remove weeds from farms, also has a special summer workshop for students.

“We have gone completely online, where the students can buy the kit and then learn all the procedures online, where the experts conduct the classes. We have also partnered with Express Avenue, where the students get to showcase their talent every Thursday,” explains Sneha Priya of Kidobotikz. “The idea is not to make students travel in summer. They have all the expert guidance available online,” she adds.
