Reporter’s Diary: When GST turns into harassment, woman turns to SHe-Box

It looks like Tamil Nadu is still reeling under the impact of Goods and Sales Tax, even over a year after its implementation. The impact seems to have been so far-reaching that those wishing to have their voices heard are turning to any available avenue to express their anguish.

One such avenue is the Sexual Harassment electronic Box (SHe-Box). An initiative by the Centre, it provides a single window access to every woman, irrespective of her work status, whether working in organised or unorganised, private or public sector, to facilitate registering complaints related to sexual harassment.

The complaints are directed to the respective dashboards of the state and the district, where the Social Welfare Department steps in to look into it. Learning about the process, an unknown complainant from Thanjavur sent her suggestion on GST, asking the government to impose 2 per cent GST on liquor, adding that it would help the government meet the treatment requirements of people affected by it.

Even as officials from the department were perplexed by the suggestion and were forced to process it within the stipulated time, they seem glad that the option has been accessed, even if it arrived from an unexpected quarter.
