IIT-M to mentor 300 women entrepreneurs

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) on Friday launched a new initiative under which 300 micro and marginal women entrepreneurs would be trained in Tamil Nadu.

IIT-M has joined hands with CAMS Group, which is providing a funding support of about Rs 45 lakh, and Hand-in-Hand India, a charitable trust, for this threeyear project, said a press release from IIT-M. The programme will  be conducted in Tamil, and the beneficiaries would be identified by Hand-in-Hand India and finalised by IIT-M. The training would be conducted in the entrepreneurs’ localities. 

Speaking at the launch event, Prof Nagarajan, Dean, Industry and Alumni Relations, IIT-M, said, “Social entrepreneurship is a key imperative of IIT-M, and corporate support in the form of CSR has come as a tremendous boost in this respect,” he added. Prof Thillai Rajan, one of the programme directors said, “This initiative is a result of the spectacular success of an earlier pilot program done in January 2016. About half of the participants in that pilot program successfully obtained bank loans within six months of completing the programme.” 

The programme would be delivered by faculty members from the Department of Management Studies, IIT, Madras and experienced practitioners from the industry. Each year,100 people would be trained. Each programme would be for a week and it would be followed by a reflective session after six months to understand how the programme has impacted the participants. 

N K Prasad, President and CEO of CAMS said, a key feature of the program was the mentoring support to the participants after completion of the program. Hand in hand would facilitate in the process of obtaining financial support for entrepreneurs developing the best business plans.
