A 19-year-old youth named Manikandan stabbed his father to death at Thathaneri cremation ground in the city on Thursday alleging the man often created a ruckus at home in an inebriated state and avoided doing any household chores.

Police said Selvakumar (42) of Aruldosspuram locality worked as a mason and was always late to work due to his alcohol addiction. Though his wife Bhuvaneswari had urged him to stop his liquor habit and go to work regularly, Selvakumar worked only for a few days in a month. He was used to squandering his wages on liquor. Police said, he frequently quarrelled with his wife and son Manikandan, a labourer demanding money from them for liquor.

There was a heated altercation between the couple on Thursday morning when Bhuvaneswari refused to lend him money. The distraught son then took his father to the nearby Thathaneri burial ground on the pretext of giving him money.

Upon reaching the cremation ground, Manikandan brutally stabbed his father with a knife, killing him on the spot.
