Visalakshi Nedunchezhiyan passes away

Senior AIADMK leader and the party organising secretary Dr Visalakshi Nedunchezhiyan passed away following a prolonged illness. She was 92. According to party officials, Visalakshi was suffering from age related ailments for the past two weeks and was undergoing treatment.

Wife of former Finance Minister and AIADMK presidum chairman, late VR Nedunchezhiyan, Visalakshi held various posts in the party and the government, including the chairperson for the state women’s commission and organising secretary of the AIADMK. Nedunchezhiyan was one of the stalwarts of the Dravidian movement, and was number two in the cabinets of CN Annadurai, MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa. He was the acting chief minister during the death of Anna and MGR. In a statement issued later during the day, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa condoled the death of the senior party leader.  She recalled her service to the party and said Visalakshi’s death was an irreparable loss to the AIADMK. She expressed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.
