Tri-junction of chaos

Thousands of commuters availing of public and private transport and pedestrians alike are subject to tremendous hardship every day, especially during peak traffic hours at the junction near Phoenix Market City in Velachery as traffic snarls are a regular occurrence.

The domino effect impacts the traffic on other arterial roads like the Velachery Main Road, Velachery bypass road that lead to Vijay Nagar junction towards Saidapet, Tambaram and other outlaying areas. A major cause for the snarl is the fact that the traffic signal at the junction is often out of order, and confusion prevails over who has right of way. People taking U-turns where they are banned, lack of pedestrian crossing and bottlenecks caused by chaotic traffic movement and narrowed road space are the other problems, says V Srinivasan, a resident. Several representations made  to the authorities have not fetched the desired result, say residents.

Traffic police say the civic work near the Vijay Nagar bus signal is the root cause of the problem. “Once the civic work is over, the traffic flow will get better. We will look into the faulty traffic signal. Technical issues take time to get sorted out but we will have them fixed soon,” says an official from the Chennai Traffic Police.
