The Southern Railway had decided to form the third line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu for a stretch of 30 km for the convenience of the passengers and to ease the congestion in the suburban route. The work started in 2016 but the work was getting delayed owing to many land acquisition problems. The work was split into three phases and all of them were completed recently.

As the test run in Singaperumal Koil and Chengalpattu was already completed by the Railways, on Friday morning the test run was conducted in Tambaram-Guduvanchery using a diesel engine. The test run started at 11 am and was conducted till 6 pm.

Following the test run, the RPF were deployed in all the stations between Tambaram and Guduvanchery to control the people from not crossing the railway tracks. The engine was operated to a speed up to 100 km per hour.
