Throwing light on eye donation

A walkathon to raise awareness on eye donation was organised by Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in association with St Joseph’s Arts and Science College college in the city on Saturday.

The event saw the participation of close to 300 students from the college’s National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme groups. 

The event was organised as part of the observation of National Eye Donation Fortnight. Mayor A Jaya flagged off the rally which started from the college and culminated at the hospital in Thillai Nagar. 

MDK Ramalingam, Medical Director, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Tiruchy, was also present. Nearly 35 lakh corneally blind people require cornea for transplantation to get back their vision. 

Approximately 20,000 new cases get added every year and majority of them are young. The eyes which one donates can give sight to two to four corneally blind people.
