What is the book all about? 

Tigers, elephants, lions and other large mammals have so far been central to India’s conservation story. However, in spite of the country’s vast coastline and millions being dependent on marine resources for their livelihoods, turtle species and habitats have been largely neglected in writings on wildlife. So this book traces the history of sea turtle conservation in India from before Independence to the present day. It contains interviews and many stories of scientists, naturalists and activists getting together to save these marine species in various coastal states including Tamil Nadu. It has been presented in a reader-friendly style.

Why the title From Soup to Superstar? 

The turtle has gone from being an exotic dish in the eastern coast to now being an icon. They are a fishery resource, a religious symbol and a conservation icon, all at the same time. This is why I call them superstars.

How has the awareness on turtle conversation evolved? 

Well, to be honest, there isn’t much that has changed. The turtle walks, seminars and other efforts to throw light on the increasing need for sea turtle conversation is limited to a small section of turtle enthusiasts and conservation biologists. To see the real difference, we need to impart animal conservation at the school level.
