Teen drowns in Chembarambakkam lake while recording 'swim'

CHENNAI: A fun dip in the water with friends turned fatal for a class 12 student who drowned in Chembarambakkam lake on Saturday evening, while his friends were recording a video.

The deceased S Jagadeesan, 17, from Kovur near Kundrathur was a Class 12 student in a government school, police said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Jagadeesan along with his friends Surya and Yuvaraj had gone to Chembarambakkam lake on Saturday.

Jagadeesan did not know swimming, police said. “When Jagadeesan wanted to take a swim one of his friends was recording a video of his first swim while another was in the water holding him. However, within seconds, Jagadeesan drowned in the lake making his friends panic, ” a police officer said.

The two boys called out for help and rescue team from police and fire and rescue services reached the scene. After a search, Jagadeesan’s body was fished out. Kundrathur police secured the body and moved it to Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem.
