District details

Kancheepuram district has three SC reserved seats — Sriperumpudur, Cheyyur and Madurantakam. The sex ratio is at 986 and literacy rate 84.49% as per 2011 census.  The district capital Kancheepuram is a temple town and also DMK founder and former CM CN Annadurai’s home town. 152 men and 4 women contested at the district in the 2011 Assembly elections. Maximum candidates were from Alandur constituency at 20. Tiruporur recorded only 3 votes for 49(O), but Tambaram saw 276. In total, 1,391 49 (O) were polled in the district. 10 MLAs of the district are from AIADMK and one from DMDK.

27. Sholinganallur 

Total No of voters: 3,57,660 

Votes polled: 2,40,583

Polling percentage: 67.27% 

Winner: KP Kandan (AIADMK)

Runner-up: SS Balaji (VCK) 

Margin: 66,972 votes

Shozhinganallur has number of IT parks and SEZ. Though it is a taluk in Kancheepuram district, it was annexed to Chennai Corporation recently. It’s a newly formed constituency after delimitation. This Assembly constituency is the biggest one in the State in terms of voters with 3.57 lakh. Winning Party: AIADMK (2011).

28. Alandur

Total No of voters: 2,39,939

Votes polled: 1,68,135

Polling percentage: 70.07% 

Winner: S Ramachandran (DMDK)

Runner-up: Dr K Ghayathri Devi (INC)

Margin: 5,754 votes

Alandur 2014 by-election 

Total No of voters: 3,13,145

Votes polled: 2,01,147

Polling percentage: 64.23%

Winner:Venkatraman VNP (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Bharathi RS (DMK)

Margin: 18,708 votes

Alandur is known as MGR constituency since MG Ramachandran had won twice here as a DMK candidate in 1967 and 1971. As the elected DMDK MLA Panruti Ramachandran resigned and joined AIADMK in 2014, by poll was held and AIADMK’s VNP Venkatraman won. Winning parties: AIADMK (2014 by poll), DMDK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989).

29. Sriperumbudur (SC) 

Total No of voters: 2,10,457

Votes polled: 1,72,263

Polling percent: 81.85%

Winner:R Perumal (AIADMK)

Runner-up: D Yasodha (INC)

Margin: 40,932 votes

Sriperumbudur used to be an INC fort and had seen Congress MLAs elected in 1957, 1962, 1980, 1984, 1991, 2001 and 2006. Former CM M Bhaktavatsalam was a twotime MLA of the constituency. D Yasodha of INC is a four-time MLA. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), INC (2006), INC (2001), DMK (1996), INC (1991), DMK (1989), INC (1984) and INC (1980).

30. Pallavaram 

Total No of voters: 2,77,671

Votes polled: 2,00,455

Polling percentage: 72.2%

Winner: P Dhansingh (AIADMK)

Runner-up: TM Anbarasan (DMK) 

Margin: 17,374 votes

It’s a newly formed constituency after delimitation. The constituency has been carved out of Tambaram and Alandur constituencies. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

31. Tambaram 

Total No of voters: 2,55,030

Votes polled: 1,78,230

Polling percentage: 69.93%

Winner: TKM Chinneyah (AIADMK)

Runner-up: SR Raja (DMK)

Margin: 13,984 votes

In 2011 elections, 276 NOTA were registered in Tambaram constituency, the maximum in Kancheepuram district. Once a DMK fort with M A Vaithyalingam of DMK winning thrice in 1989, 1996 and 2001. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), DMK (2001), DMK (1996), INC (1991), DMK (1989).
