Now 93, M Karunanidhi, one of the Tamil Nadu’s most powerful political figures, has not lost a single election so far. Interestingly, he entered politics at a surprisingly young age of 14. After a long political stint, full of ups and downs, he assumed the post of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1969 after the untimely death of his mentor C Annadurai.

The 5-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the 12-time Member of the Legislative Assembly Kalaignar (fondly called by his supporters), is contesting the Assembly Elections for a record 13th time from his sitting constituency Tiruvarur, which happens to be his home town. Though Karunanidhi was born at Thirukuvalai, Nagapattinam district, he lived and studied in Tiruvarur.

In 2011, the DMK President emerged victorious with a whopping margin of 50,249 votes against the AIADMK’s Kodavasal M Rajendran. Karunanidhi has been the MLA of Chepauk five times, twice for Anna Nagar, twice in Saidapet and Harbour constituencies.

Interestingly, the contest this time has become all the more intriguing with A.N.R. Pannerselvam of AIADMK, Rengadoss of BJP, Masilamani of CPI and PMK’s R Sivakumar in the fray. It is expected to be a tough contest for the 93-year-old DMK chief in his native constituency.

To become the Chief Minister for the sixth term, Karunanidhi must work hard this time to beat his rivals in the multi cornered battle.

Winning parties in the constituency (1977-2011)

DMK – 5 (2011, 2006, 2001, 1996 and 1977)

CPM – 4 (1991, 1989, 1984 and 1980)
