He was rushed to the emergency care services on June 8, with severe abdominal pain and fever. During diagnosis, doctors found the blades and plastic pipe in his body, which he had swallowed two weeks ago. “It was a miracle that he survived that long. This is the first time we have had to remove razor blades,” said Dr Ponnambalam Namasivayam, the dean of the hospital. 

Stating that the X-ray revealed the foreign bodies and also showed puss formation in the liver, Dr S Saravana Kumar said, “We had to remove the puss to save him from developing sepsis and multi organ failure. After he was stabilised, we removed the razor blades first from the respiratory tract on June 10 using a special equipment called Fibre Optic Bronchoscopy.” 

A few days later, on June 16, a team of doctors from the Surgery department removed the plastic tube in a three-hour procedure. “The rod, about five mm long, was apparently the one used for measuring the size of pappad in companies,” said Dr M Vignesh, Assistant Professor, General Surgery Department.
