Seven killed, 3 injured in fireworks godown blaze

Seven people, including five women, were killed and three others seriously injured when a massive fire engulfed a fireworks godown at Naranapuram near Sivakasi.

Police said a group of workers were engaged in loading the completed fireworks into a lorry, when the fire broke out due to friction. The godown where huge stocks of fireworks were stored for Diwali sale was completely destroyed in the blaze.

Explosion of fireworks left a huge plume of smoke blanketing the area. Fire tenders rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire. The fire engulfed a nearby scan centre and destroyed atleast 20 vehicles including goods carriers and Lorries.

Nearly thirty people were reportedly rescued from the godown and adjacent buildings by the personnel of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services department and police.

Preliminary reports said seven workers, including five women were killed in the fire, while three others seriously injured. The injured were admitted to government hospital at Sivakasi.  

Senior revenue and police officials rushed to the site to inspect the rescue and relief operations.
