Semmozhi Poonga wall collapses, crushes two cars

A source from the park management said that this wall which collapsed was a part of the older structure, which existed before the botanical park came up in 2010. “This is the only wall in the entire park which existed before the park came up. Due to the rain, the wall collapsed around 6.30 in the morning.

The inspections have been done by higher officials and measurements have been taken. Within the next day or so, the reconstruction would begin,” said the source.

When questioned about the damage to property, the source added, “The cars were parked on the road adjacent to the park, which is not meant for it. We have inspected the location and have also considered the safety aspect of the rest of the walls. Since it was an old wall, it had collapsed due to the rain.”

An employee of the park said that luckily, nobody was hurt. “Usually, conservancy workers would be cleaning the road, pedestrians would be walking or cars would be driving past.

Since the incident occurred early in the morning, nobody was grievously hurt,” added the employee.
