The incident happened on Ponneri-Panchetti road at Peruncheri around 8.30 am, said the police. The van was carrying about 10 schoolchildren from nearby villages to a private higher secondary school at Panchetti. It hit Kuruvappa who was waiting near the bus stop and toppled into an open drain on the roadside. Hearing the noise, villagers and passers-by rescued the children from the van and rushed them to Ponneri government hospital. Kuruvappa was shifted to a private hospital in Chennai for treatment.

On information, the Ponneri police rushed to the spot and conducted inquiries. Villagers complained the school vans are being operated without speed controllers, which often resulted in accidents in the locality.
