CHENNAI: The century-old market in Saidapet will get a facelift as Health Minister Ma Subramanian, deputy mayor M Mahesh Kumar and Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, on Wednesday, visited the market and reviewed works to be taken up at the market.

During the inspection, M Subramanian said that the buildings in the market are in a dilapidated state and shop owners and customers are facing difficulties during the rain.

"Cost estimates to renovate the market will be prepared following which tenders will be floated. To facilitate continuous function of the market during works, a suitable ground will be identified and the shops will be shifted there temporarily," he added.

Temporary shops will be provided to the traders based on the size of their present shops in the market.

He also pointed out shops that were constructed in 1996 for the use of street vendors behind the existing market. However, the shops remain vacant presently. The civic body will use the land to upgrade a maternity hospital functioning near the market.

"There are hundreds of shops including vegetable shops, fruit shops and meat shops functioning in the market. Vegetable shops and fruit shops are functioning on the land belonging to the civic body, " the minister said.
