Retired professor arrested for cheating women of Rs 23 lakh

Vepery police have arrested a 65-year-old retired professor for cheating three women to the tune of Rs 23 lakh on the promise of getting them jobs in a bank and have launched a hunt for his son.

The arrested was identified as D Gopalakrishnan of Perumalpet who worked as a professor at Sir Theagaraya College in Washermenpet on a contract basis, while his son Raj Bharath (35) has already been arrested for cheating a few others using the same modus operandi. The victim, Jenifer Arokiyamary, met Raj Bharath in 2017 when the latter promised to get her a job at a private bank. Believing him, Jenifer and her two friends paid Rs 23 lakh in total to the father-son duo.

While Jenifer has lodged a complaint with Vepery police in February, Gopalakrishnan was arrested on Wednesday and remanded. Raj Bharath remains at large.
