Property documents seized after raid

A simultaneous search by Income Tax sleuths of Health Minister Vijaya Baskar’s house, business establishments including a stone quarry went on for hours on Friday. A few documents were seized by the officials here on Friday.

Led by Coimbatore Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Ramalingam, a team of officials from Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchy and Coimbatore arrived at the Pudukkottai residence of Vijaya Baskar at Sourashtra Street in Iluppur here at around 6.45 am. They also searched the stone quarry at Thiruvengaivasal and a lodge near Iluppur bus stand here. 

The officials have reportedly seized documents related to the properties acquired in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka as well as overseas. However, the officials refused to divulge further details. Meanwhile, at around 12.30 pm, a section of AIADMK (Amma) cadre gathered in front of the Minister’s house and raised slogans against Prime minister Modi and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam. They also created a mild flutter when they accused the media gathered there, of being biased. Soon, Vijaya Baskar’s father R Chinnathambi came out and appealed for calm. Subsequently, they stopped the slogans but waited there till the evening. 

Officials avoid local police 

It is mandatory that the central officials who come on search operations to call the local police. However, on this particular raid, they did not seek the support of the local police. Instead, they were accompanied by around 20 CRPF personnel.
