Property case: Corporation officer summoned

The Madras High Court has summoned the Zonal Officer of Corporation of Chennai, Adyar over the alleged inaction in the removal of certain unauthorised constructions at the Wakf property in Nandanam.

The first bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan, before whom a PIL filed by Muhammad Mujeebur Rahman, Secretary, Nawab Fazeelathunissa Begum Sahiba Mosque and Endowment Wakf of Anna Salai, Nandanam came up, posted the next hearing in the case to November 24 and ordered the official to be present. 

The petitioner had contended that Wakf properties in Nandanam were leased out to various private parties for a meagre rent. But, despite court directions that no illegal construction should be carried in the property, all lease holders were carrying out unauthorised constructions. 

He further submitted that despite raising objections and urging the authorities to prevent the illegal construction nothing had transpired so far. The petitioner on noting that the inaction on the part of the authorities approached the court seeking direction to remove the unauthorized construction.
