CHENNAI: A passenger who smoked inside the flight was detained by the police on Monday and later let off with a warning. The Indigo Airlines flight from Kuwait was heading towards Chennai with 178 passengers.

When the flight was in mid-air, Faruk (42) of Tiruvarur was found using the toilet often. When fellow passengers noticed that he was smoking inside the toilet, they informed the cabin crew.

When the crew questioned Faruk, he reportedly said that he did not smoke cigarettes and was only using the restroom.

However, later it was confirmed that Faruk had been smoking in the restroom, and alerted the pilot. Once the flight landed in Chennai at noon, Faruk was detained and handed over to the airport police.

During the inquiry, the police found that Faruk was a car driver in Kuwait and was returning to India for holidays. Faruk apologised and requested the police not to file a case.

The police warned him and let him go after getting a written statement.
