According to the police, when the bus driver, Ramesh (37), took the vehicle from the Chengalpattu bus depot at 5.30 pm, he noticed smoke emanating from the engine. He then left the bus at the depot for service and took a spare bus which was used to operate between Chengalpattu and Thachur.

As he was told that his bus was ready, he took the vehicle from the depot for the final trip of the day. After that, he parked the bus on the roadside and took a nap nearby.

Around 1 am, the bus caught fire, the police said. Soon, the Madurantakam fire and rescue team reached the spot and doused the blaze. The Annaicut police have registered a case and investigation is under way.
