Over 6200 nominations for May 16 polls

Over 6,200 candidates, including more than 700 women and two transgender candidates have filed their nominations for the May 16 assembly election even as the deadline drew to a close on Friday.

While most of the top leaders and candidates of various political parties filed their nominations during the first three days of this week, thousands of independent candidates showed interest in filing their nominations in different constituencies till the end.

Filing of nominations began on April 22 and scrutiny of nominations would take place on Saturday. The number of contestants in the fray for the May 16 elections will be known on May 2, which is also the last date for withdrawal of nominations.

This is the first time transgender candidates have filed their nominations to enter the fray. While 38-year old C Devi of Naam Tamilar Katchi filed her papers for RK Nagar, an independent candidate M Anushiyashree, of Hindu Makkal Katchi filed her nomination for Madurai South.
