Kerala was trying to build a dam of 500 metres length and a height of 51 feet at a cost of Rs 900 crore in the catchment areas of Tamil Nadu. Kerala could supply drinking water through pipeline from its Idukki dam and need not resort to building a dam at Attapady. He called upon all political parties to shed their differences and raise their voice against the injustice done by the indifferent central government.
He said finding a legal solution was a time-consuming process. Even if a favourable verdict were to be obtained, it was not going to be respected by other stakeholders, Veeramani said, citing the Cauvery tribunal verdict. He offered full support to a fight against injustice. “Unless we learn lessons of unity like other neighbours our list of woes will get extended,” he warned.
He pointed out that Coimbatore and others districts supplied essential food items worth Rs 500 crore to Kerala every day. Therefore, by constructing a dam across Siruvani, Kerala must remember that it was causing misery to the people of those districts which were the providers of articles like milk, eggs and vegetables. The people of Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur were strongly opposed to the Kerala plan for a new dam, he pointed out.
