As per the data, more than 20 lakh persons have attended the camps from May 8 to August 22, which is 24 per cent attendance against the civic body’s estimation of 82.16 lakh population. During the period, 36,476 fever camps were conducted across the city.

“Of the 20 lakh persons, who attended the camps, we identified 1.57 lakh persons with influenza-like-illness (ILI) symptoms. We have also identified around 20,000 COVID-19 cases through the camps,” an official said.

More than 2.21 lakh persons attended the camps in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone, which is the highest attendance among the 15 city zones. Of the total attended persons, 1,308 positive cases have been identified.

Of the 1.16 lakh persons, 1,996 positive cases were identified in Valasaravakkam zone, which is the highest number of positive cases identified in a zone.

On Saturday alone, Chennai Corporation conducted 399 fever camps, in which 13,163 persons attended and 878 persons with ILI symptoms were identified. Of more than 8.5 lakh samples that the civic body tested, 1.10 lakh samples were collected at the fever camps.

Despite being no constriction to attend fever camps, complaints surface against civic body officials for coercing the residents to attend the camps.

On Sunday, some residents in Saidapet alleged that the civic body, along with the police, took the two-wheeler riders to the camps without their consent.
